Connecting the Dots Issue 6: What Bodycams?

The tricky—or as David West, Director of the Police Complaints Authority (PCA), put it, “disturbing“—thing about the 133% increase in police killings is that we only have the TTPS’ word to go on when it comes to whether the shootings are justified or not. And when we’re talking about an organisation with a history as troubling as theirs, that’s not nearly enough.

The good news is that we have about 940 bodycams right now and another 3,000 have been ordered for officers to wear in order to ensure transparency. The bad news is that they’re either not wearing the ones they have or, when they are wearing them, the footage never manages to make its way across to the PCA. Also, the 3,000 additional cameras have reportedly been stuck in storage since September of 2024, racking up storage fees of US$220,000 per month.

So de badness does go, I guess.
